Dear John
“Dear John” is in memory of a man who left home leaving a note and a young son who had nothing to remember him by. And, in another way, it’s about men who like traditional masculine smells and women who love to recall them, whether it’s in the past or just an evocation during brief absences. It’s how a father should smell and it’s the urge to remind yourself of a person by burying your face in a well-loved jacket. “Dear John” is a perfumery portrait of a man and the security, trust, and love that he brings with his presence.
This scent is an imaginary portrait of Mark’s own father, who did in fact leave home with a “Dear John” letter. The composition encapsulates many of those perfumery notes that immediately bring to mind the safety and security of home. Washing powder. After-shave and shaving cream. Mouthwash. Coffee. A hint of smoke clinging to a jacket superseded by the woody warmth of an old wardrobe, Clove bud and leaf cassia create a tinge of mouthwash. Black pepper lime and musks travel into an unmistakable whiff of aftershave and shaving cream. Then, overtones of coffee and white thyme, with its passing hint of smokiness. Woody balsamic notes recall the warmth where the sports jacket is hanging. A small boy climbs in and rubs his face in the fabric. The memory of a man comes alive.
